Sustainable investing incorporates a multitude of considerations, often referred to as ESG (environmental, social, and governance) topics, into investment decision making.
At Gitterman Wealth Management, we refer to ESG as the “GPS of Investing,” in that we see many similarities between ESG data and a car’s GPS system.
A GPS system receives real-time information that helps us to navigate any trip we’re taking. A GPS alerts us to things like traffic and hazardous road conditions, providing us with live feed information to reroute us when necessary.
ESG is similar. It can furnish us with fresh information from all over the world about a broad range of issues that companies are facing. ESG data is the foundation of an investment portfolio because it helps avoid potential pitfalls and hazards that traditional financial data does not account for. In addition, it gives us the opportunity to vote with our money for the world we want to live in.
